ABOUT & HISTORY

Boxcar Theatre is a Directors Theatre supporting the concepts and vision of the director. Whether original, adapted, or pre-published, Boxcar productions are bold and ambitious with a flair for the visual and fantastical.

Founded in 2005, Boxcar has produced over 60 shows. Notable productions include: Hedwig and the Angry InchLittle Shop of HorrorsClueWhere the Sidewalk Ends, and two repertory festivals – One featuring 3 Tennessee Williams plays (Cat on a Hot Tin RoofThe Glass Menagerie, and A Streetcar Named Desire), the other consisting of 4 Sam Shepard plays (True WestA Lie of the MindA Fool for Love, and Buried Child). Boxcar’s acclaimed immersive production The Speakeasy featured over 1600 pages of scripted content, 35 actors and ran for 3 years.

Known for their unconventional staging, and founded as a site specific theatre, Boxcar has performed on Baker Beach, a moving bus, an abandoned office, a furniture store, parks, actual living rooms, and even museums across the Bay Area (most notably the Fisherman’s Wharf Wax Museum).

Under the artistic leadership of Nick A. Olivero, Boxcar continues to present and produce at The Palace Theater in San Francisco’s historic North Beach district.
